Methodology

PURPOSE

This environmental policy scan was done while interning at WalkDenver in 2015. The research was funded by a grant from Mile High Connects.

The staff at WalkDenver will use the findings from this research to make recommendations to the City of Denver on how they might be able to cost-effectively fund sidewalk maintenance and repair.

METHODS FOR CITY SELECTION

24 cities were selected, based on their Walk Friendly Communities Gold status. Of 24 cities contacted, 11 responded with details of how they fund sidewalk maintenance and repair. Some contacts were willing to participate in a telephone interview where I was able to ask more questions and get information on specific challenges that arose and how they resolved them.

There are four cities highlighted. Their solutions to sidewalk funding seemed most feasible for recommendations to the City of Denver.

There are detailed reports on each of the 11 cities that participated in this research. The level of detail is based on the amount of information obtained from each source.
